Bowls News - The Saturday side is the semi-final!The Club's
Saturday Pennant team is second on the ladder. They played against regular
rivals and fifth-placed Mulgrave Country Club last Saturday. And the MCC crew
certainly were keen. They arrived two hours before the game start time and
seemed to have a number of different players in their side compared to when we
played them earlier in the season. Our team of
Graeme Hattwell (skip), John Hewitt (third), Daryl Leask (second) and Yvonne
Davis (lead) had a difficult day against a very determined opponent who scored
heavily over the final four ends to win by 9 shots, 12 to 21. Similarly, our
team of Gary Billing, Tom Brennan, Elaine Stow and Peter Evans really had their
hands full with their opponent continually picking up single shots. At the tea
break the team was down 2 shots to 12 and at the final bell after the mandatory
21 ends the team lost by 10 shots, 11 to 21. It was a
different story with the Club's other two teams, and it had to be, because the
difference in overall scores with 3/4 ends to be played by each of our four
teams showed that there was only a couple of shots between the two clubs. It
was a close, nail-biting last 45 minutes. The team lead by
Ken Hargreaves (skip) with Colin Jeffery (third), Colin Jones, (second) and
Lance Britt (lead) were playing well. At the start of their last end and
with only a couple of shots between the clubs overall scores, Lance's big white
bowls finished close to the jack to be quickly followed by the Jones and
Jeffery bowls and then the skips two. The team picked up a couple to win their
game by 11 shots 24 to 13. A very good win. But the honours
of the day must go to the team lead by Jim Scoular (skip), with Jackie Jeffery
(third), Thomas Burton (second) and Julie McDonald (lead). They were playing
great bowls. There was only a single shot difference between the two clubs. The
members of the other three teams, having finished, were standing on the
sidelines with fingers (and toes) crossed. Something had to give. Jim's last
bowl curled in and was an extra counting bowl. The team picked up a terrific 6
shots and won their match by 15 shots, 28 to 13. The overall score
was a 7 shot victory to Churchill-Waverley, 72 shots to 65 and we remain in
second position on the ladder ready to play in the first semi next Saturday. Interesting
facts. DID YOU KNOW that the bowling green was built by the club's golfers in
1964 to be used by the club's golfers when they wanted a break from golf. These
days all of the Club's golfers may try their hand at bowling - there are plenty
of bowls available - you just have to ask. DID YOU KNOW that there have been 248 individual players from all clubs in the
bowling section in which we participate. Our Ken Hargreaves is ranked at #1,
Jim Scoular is ranked at #5 and a further 12 of our players are ranked in the
top 50. That's pretty good, I reckon. Daryl Leask - Bowls |
