Bowls News - Semi FinalLast Saturday our club’s
members travelled to Willow Lodge to play against the competitions top side on
their fast, tightly woven synthetic surface. It was going to be a tough game. We won the toss and
batted. At the half-way mark the
team of Graeme Hattwell (skip), John Hewitt, (third), Jackie Jeffery (second)
and Yvonne Davis (lead), were playing well but were down 7 shots to 9. Ken Hargreaves team of
Colin Jeffery, Geoff Walker and Colin Jones were holding their opponent at 7
shots apiece while Gary Billing’s team of Tom Brennan, Thomas Burton and Elaine
Stow were also containing their opponents to be 8 shots to 9. Jim Scoular’s
team of Daryl Leask, Els Hogan and Lance Britt were having a bit of trouble and
were being headed 6 shots to 10. All teams were often
holding shot only to see their good work being undone by the opposition skips’
good bowls. After each team had
bowled 15 ends the overall score was 48 to their 52. It was close with Graeme 1
shot up, Ken had just lost a couple to be 10 to 16, Jim’s team had crept in
front to be 12 to 10 shots while Gary was only the one shot adrift 13 to 14. This semi-final match
was really close. Graeme’s team played
their final, 21st end confidently and won their match 17 shots to 14. Ken’s team was unable to
contain their opponents in the last couple of ends and went down by 4 shots 19
to 23. Gary’s team had played
well all afternoon but lost a single shot on the last end to go down 16 shots
to 17. Three teams had finished
with Jim’s team still playing. Our overall score at this stage was 52 shots to
our opponents 54. The last bowl of the day
was in Jim’s hand . At the head Els had a bowl four inches in front of the
jack, Daryl had a bowl 4 inches to the left of the jack while an opponent’s
bowl was 6 inches out front left. We were holding 2 shots which if retained would
level the overall scores. The umpire said that if the teams tied our opponent
club would win because of a count-back on ends won. Jim therefore decided to
bowl the final bowl of the day trying to make a third shot to enable our club
to win the day. It bumped the opponent bowl hard enough to make it career
between our two close bowls - it nudged them both out and scored an additional
shot for our opponents. The day finished with our club losing 69 shots to 72. This coming Saturday
Churchill-Waverley plays Hampton Park at home in the Preliminary Final. Good luck to all
players. Daryl Leask - Bowls |
