Bowls News - Will it be a premiership this year?At the start of January the Club's Saturday
bowlers were lying fifth on the ladder, playing reasonably well but needing a
few good wins. Three weeks ago and with clinical, precision
bowling our side beat the top club by three shots after a mammoth struggle in
very hot and humid conditions. This win moved our side to third on the ladder
but with only a couple of shots separating the top four clubs. Then, two weeks ago, our players travelled to
the Edithvale club fairly sure that a win might elevate the side to second on
the ladder. The side had a very comfortable victory by 20 shots. Last Saturday the side played Chelsea at
Chelsea. Graeme Hattwell (skip), John Hewitt (third),
Colin Jones (second) and Yvonne Davis (lead) played steady bowls and won by 9
shots. Jim Scoular, Daryl Leask, Els Hogan and Maria
Konstas had a great day with Jim in magnificent form - a win by 21 shots. Gary Billing, Tom Brennan, Colin Jeffery and
Peter Evans had a good tussle for the whole day and finally came out on top by
5 shots after the mandatory 21 ends. Ken Hargreaves, Geoff Walker, Jackie Jeffery and
Julie MacDonald rounded off a perfect day for the Churchill-Waverley bowlers.
It was close all day but the team persisted and picked up a one-shot win. This win against Chelsea puts the side into
second position on the ladder with one round to play this Saturday before the
final series. We play at home and it's against our regular rivals, the Mulgrave
Country Club. Good luck to all players
