Waverley Trophy and Cohuna ShieldLast Sunday saw four bowlers and six golfers from
Churchill-Waverley Golf & Bowls Club competing at the Maryborough Golf
& Bowls Club in the annual Waverley Trophy for bowlers and the Cohuna
Shield for golfers. The bowlers were playing in the 50th anniversary
tournament since members of the former Waverley Golf Club bowls section (namely
Ian McPherson and Con Gounas) organised the first event in 1975. Jim Scoular
(skip), Ken Hargraves (third), Gary Billing (second) and Daryl Leask (lead) played
great bowls for the three games of 10 ends. They beat the Avoca team 8 shots to
6 and played the second match against the Cohuna club members winning 12 shots
to 7. The third game against the Kerang team was close fought but on the
last end our opponents scored 2 shots and beat our team by 1 shot, 10 to our 9.
As a result our club ended up in third position from the ten clubs involved.
The home club was the winner on the day. Our club's eight golfers had their usual entertaining weekend,
playing in the Maryborough club's Saturday competition followed by a convivial
evening. Playing in the 48th annual golf event on Sunday with the best three
stableford scores to count from each team of four players, our team of Leigh
Simons, Ingatius Koulas, Alex Dean and Glenn Day had a very successful
afternoon. 110 points was a very satisfactory conclusion to a good
weekend. Second place to a top scoring 118 points by the Beaufort team was very
well done. Next year the Waverley Trophy for bowlers and the Cohuna Shield
for golfers will be held at the Hill Top Golf & Country Club at Tatura. Daryl Leask |
